Leshon haKodesh. The language of Hebrew prayers.


The objective of the course:

1. Introduction to Ashkenazi and Sefardic pronunciation, deepening of knowledge, continual development of reading skills.

2. After introduction to prayer structures, teaching the translation of the significant units of our prayers and understanding their message.

Realization of the objective:

1. Proportional utilization of group reading excercises, individually or in the forms of Chavrutah or groups.

2. Use of adequately prepared audio and video tapes.

3. Following the acquisition of the skills necessary for translation, students prepare for next month’s lecture at home then recount what they have learned at the lecture.

Training material by semester:

First semester: Ashkenazi pronunciation.
Second semester: Sefardic pronunciation.
Third semester: Translation exercise. Weekday morning prayers.
Fourth semester: Translation exercise. Weekday evening prayers.
Comprehensive exam

Fifth semester: Translation exercise. Friday evening prayers.
Sixth semester: Translation exercise. Sabbath prayers.
Seventh semester: Translation exercise. Prayers of the Pilgrim Festivals.
Eight semester: Translation exercise. Prayers of the High Holidays.
Comprehensive exam
