Center for Jewish Liturgical Music

Objectives:

1. Serving training in Jewish Liturgy and teacher-training for religion, training students,
2. providing training in the theory of Jewish music for the students of Hungarian universities and colleges,
3. providing primary and extended training for Hungarian and foreign cantors and singers,
4. providing post-graduate extended training for the religion teachers of Jewish schools and for teachers in Hungarian music schools,
5. continuing research in music, documenting, recording, publishing and making widely accessible the materials collected. Within this:

- Seeking out elderly persons who are not professional prayer leaders but who, because of their age and the education they had received at home and in school possess a knowledge of Judaism the preservation of which could be important. By recording these materials on videotapes, writing down the musical notations, then registering and archiving the materials they are made available for posterity, and as the integral parts of Hungarian culture they can be published for the use of Hungarian and international scholars and the greater public.

- Researching the influence of Hungarian folk music in Hungarian Jewish musical culture and the music of Jewish religious services,

- Researching how the music of Eastern European nations and nationalities influenced Hungarian Jewish musical culture and the music of Jewish religious services.

The Center for Jewish Liturgical Music possesses a computer database and an audio-visual studio. In this, practicing singing and music, tutoring, processing and presentation of audio-visual materials, locally recording new works and learning the desired material individually or with the help of a professor is possible. The studio edits musical materials stored on various data-storing devices, makes copies, edits and prepares for publication musical notes and other written musical material.

Equipment: traditional piano, electric piano, amplifier, speakers, basic equipment of a music studio (recorders for spool and cassette tapes, record players, CD players, mixing station), microports for audio recordings, quality video camera, VCRs, televisions and a monitor, storage units for cassettes, records and CDs.

We recorded and continue to record the lectures, productions of liturgical music given in the framework of the specialization in Jewish liturgy and make a sufficient number of copies for all of the students. We record liturgical presentations on 8mm videotapes and copy these onto conventional VHS tapes. We also use these to tape educational television programs and other demonstrative materials and make copies for all students.
